DR KATE DU TOIT

Counselling Psychologist
CPsychol, HCPC Reg., BA (Hons), PsychD, AFBPsS, FHEA, EMDR (Level 1, 2, 3), IFS  (Level 1)

I am an HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and BPS (British Psychological Society) registered Counselling Psychologist, and Internal Family Systems Therapist (IFS Institute, Level 1) specialising in trauma and the treatment of moderate to severe mental health issues in adults.

With over a decade of clinical experience, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of individuals, couples, groups and families across different settings (NHS, private and charitable organisations) including primary, secondary inpatient and forensic services. The experiences I have gained across these different settings and contexts has played a large role in shaping how I approach human distress and assess suitability for psychotherapy interventions in my own practice. I recognise that some difficulties may be transitory or temporary in nature and respond well to brief, more focussed therapeutic interventions, while others may be of a more long-standing or chronic nature and be better suited to longer term psychotherapy. Many individuals may also seek therapy not due to a specific trauma or crisis per se,  but rather out of a desire to get to know and understand themselves better.  My training and experience brings an open mind; I do not believe in a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. Whatever the situation or reason for seeking therapy, the initial consultation provides a space for us to explore your current needs and difficulties, ascertain how we might work together, and get a sense of whether it feels a good fit. As an integrative practitioner, I draw upon a variety of different therapeutic approaches (primarily existential, psychodynamic, and IFS) depending on the needs of each client. You can read more about how I work here.

In addition to my psychotherapeutic training and practice, I am also a clinical and research supervisor,  trainer, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). My background in academia includes several years working on doctoral trainings in counselling psychology and psychotherapy. I am particularly passionate about existential, phenomenological and postmodern philosophies and their application to clinical practice. My research interests encompass topics that seek to question or challenge the prevailing medical discourse, in addition to those that involve giving voice to oppressed or marginalised groups, themes of embodiment, intersubjectivity, spirituality, gender and sexuality, and the use of creativity and arts in therapeutic practice.

My own research explored the role of uncertainty in therapeutic practice and beyond; an exploration that  revealed how significant our own attitude towards this phenomenon is, in shaping how we approach and engage with our own problems in living. In a world of ever-increasing complexity and change, uncertainty is inevitable.  People are usually seeking some form of change when they step into my consulting room, and change necessarily involves an encounter with uncertainty, which is naturally quite anxiety inducing. However, it does not need to take us down the path of fear and paralysis; uncertainty can also serve as a pathway towards innovation, creativity and possibility. This understanding greatly influences my way of practicing; I will not try to 'fix', 'rescue', or talk you out of your experiences. Instead I will safely hold the space of uncertainty and not knowing, gently encouraging you to remain present and to lean in to the discomfort of your vulnerabilities so that you can connect with greater clarity within yourself about your desired path forward.
